Food processing equipment runs on keyed rotating components — auger shafts, mixer agitators, conveyor drives, pump and blower hubs — and nearly all of them are made from stainless steel for sanitation and corrosion resistance. That combination, keyed components in stainless, is exactly where standard keyway methods get difficult: stainless work-hardens under broaching, the bores are frequently blind, and food-grade design often prohibits the relief features that broaching requires.

Where Keyways Appear in Food Processing Equipment

Screw conveyor and auger shafts — augers move product through mixing, conveying, extrusion, and packaging systems. The flighting and drive components are keyed to the auger shaft, and the keyways must be accurate for reliable torque transmission and clean operation. Auger drive coupling hubs are frequently blind bores.

Mixer and agitator shafts — industrial food mixers and agitators use keyed connections between the drive, the shaft, and the mixing elements. Mixer shaft hubs and coupling connections require precise internal keyways, often in larger-diameter stainless components.

Conveyor drive components — belt and chain conveyor systems in food plants use keyed drive pulleys, sprockets, and reducer hubs. These are high-turnover wear components where in-house keyway capability eliminates outsourcing delays.

Pump and blower hubs — sanitary pumps and pneumatic conveying blowers in food processing use keyed impeller and rotor connections, typically in stainless steel.

Packaging machinery drives — filling, sealing, and packaging equipment use keyed drive components throughout, frequently in smaller bore sizes with tight tolerances.

Slicing, grinding, and size-reduction equipment — keyed cutter heads, knife hubs, and drive shafts in size-reduction machinery require accurate keyways for balance and safe operation at speed.

The Food Processing Keyway Challenge

Stainless steel everywhere. Food contact and washdown environments require stainless — typically 304 or 316, sometimes higher grades. Stainless work-hardens rapidly under broaching, where each successive tooth passes through the hardened layer left by the previous one, accelerating wear and risking tool failure. The keyseat miller’s single-pass operation avoids the progressive multi-tooth loading that drives stainless work-hardening problems.

Sanitary design prohibits relief features. Food-grade equipment is designed to eliminate gaps, crevices, and dead spaces where product can accumulate and bacteria can grow. Drilling a relief hole or cross-hole to enable broaching would create exactly the kind of contamination point that sanitary design forbids. The keyseat miller requires no relief feature — the keyway terminates cleanly with no added crevice.

Blind bores are common. Auger coupling hubs, mixer shaft connections, and drive hubs are frequently blind bores. Broaching needs a through path or relief feature; the keyseat miller mills to full depth in a blind bore without either.

Cleanability and finish matter. A clean, accurately milled keyway with no burrs or tearing supports the smooth, cleanable surfaces that food safety requires. NMT tooling produces clean keyway walls in a single pass.

Hygienic compliance. Precisely machined keyways with no added features support compliance with food safety standards (FDA, USDA, 3-A Sanitary Standards) by maintaining the equipment’s designed-in cleanability.

How the Keyseat Miller Works

The tool is custom-manufactured to your bore diameter and keyway dimensions. It mounts in a standard drill chuck, collet, or CNC tool holder and feeds axially into the bore, with the bore wall guiding the cutter on centerline. The rotating cutter mills the keyway to full width and depth in one pass — terminating cleanly inside a blind bore, with no relief feature and no part modification.

For stainless specifically, the cutter geometry and operating parameters are specified for the grade so the tool cuts cleanly rather than rubbing and work-hardening the material. The tool runs on a manual drill press, knee mill, or CNC machining center.
